BMW i8 2017 – First BMW Concept Vision Efficient Dynamics

The BMW i8 2017 model is a sports car from the hybrid concept car Vision Efficient Dynamics. Presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA), it combines hybrid technology and classical sports performance. The production version was presented at the 2013 edition of the IAA. This model is part of BMW’s “i” project, which is being launched as a new brand.

The concept study served as a technology carrier for further developments at BMW. Up until now, energy saving technologies have been integrated into existing models, an overall concept for energy saving has been developed from the outset in the BMW Vision Efficient Dynamics. Body and drive were designed specifically with energy-saving aspects.

BMW i8 2017 : Design

This model is positioned as sporty 2 + 2 but despite the hunt for superfluous masses the interior is luxurious, sporting tanned leather and high-end plastics.. Based on the layering technique, the design of the BMW Vision is rather futuristic, reminiscent of the dreamcars of the 1950s . The high use of glazing gives a very open effect to the concept car. The numerous lamellae characteristic of the layering like those composing the taillights channel the air arriving through the slots of the front bumper which play the role of aerodynamic flanges.

BMW i8 2017 :Engine

The BMW i8 has a three-cylinder petrol engine of 231 hp and 320 Nm , which is found “deflated” on the Mini version 2014, and an electric motor per axle. The use of an alternator-starter of 15 kW helps to erase the latency time when starting the thermal group.

The front electric power unit develops 131 hp and involves only the front axle, the rear is a mixture of thermal and electric thanks to the automatic transmission. At low engine speed the engine is backed up by a 20 hp electric motor. The autonomy is within 600 km , including 37 km in electricity, with a tank of 30 liters and Li-Ion (Iron Phosphate) of 7.1 kWh under 355 Volts.

The BMW i8 Concept Spyder, designed by Richard Kim, has a slightly shorter wheelbase and overall length than the BMW i8 Concept. The Life module is made of carbon fiber (CFRP), and the Drive module consists mainly of aluminum components. The intersecting faces and lines engage through the so-called layering, creating a dynamic side image. The 8.8 inch (22.4cm) display, the off-white outer layer and the orange leather interior were added to the option range.

The vehicle experienced its world premiere at the Beijing Auto Show in 2012 and won the Best Production Preview Vehicle Award. Subsequently, BMW i8 2017 Spyder first time was presented at the 83rd Geneva Motor Show in 2013.
